Structural Design

Drawings that hold. Approved the first time.

Reinforced concrete and steel design for residential and small commercial projects in Nairobi, Kiambu, and Kajiado. Every drawing is approved and stamped by a licensed EBK consulting engineer before submission.

What we design.

We design the full structural frame of a building — the parts that carry load and keep the structure standing for the next fifty years.

  • Foundations — pad, strip, raft, and pile caps
  • Reinforced concrete slabs, beams, columns, and shear walls
  • Steel frames for commercial and industrial buildings
  • Retaining walls and basement structures
  • Roof structures and mezzanine floors
  • Structural strengthening and retrofit of existing buildings

What you receive.

  • Structural analysis report (load paths, member sizing, deflection)
  • Foundation plan and detail drawings
  • Slab and beam layout drawings
  • Column schedules and reinforcement details
  • Bar bending schedules for the contractor
  • Full drawing set stamped by Eng. John Njuguna, EBK Reg. No. A3090
  • Source files (DWG and PDF) — yours permanently

The approval path.

Structural work in Kenya must be signed off by a licensed EBK consulting engineer before the county will approve a building plan. This is not optional — and it's the step most small firms get wrong.

Here's how we handle it: our team produces the design. Eng. John Njuguna reviews every drawing, tests the load paths, and stamps the set. Then we submit to the county on your behalf — Nairobi, Kiambu, or Kajiado — and manage every query and revision until the permit is issued.

In practice, structural approval is the fastest part of the process. The delays clients complain about usually come from architectural or environmental approvals, which is why we coordinate all of them together rather than in sequence.

Timeline.

  • Concept structural layout — 1 week
  • Full design and analysis — 2 to 3 weeks
  • EBK review and stamp — 1 week
  • County submission and approval — 2 to 4 weeks

Total: 6 to 9 weeks from first call to construction-ready structural drawings. For a typical 6-unit rental block in Nairobi.

Questions we get asked.

Do you work with contractors I've already hired?

Yes. We hand the full drawing set and bar bending schedule to your contractor. If they have questions, we answer them directly — you don't need to be the go-between.

Can you review drawings another engineer has already produced?

Yes. We do structural reviews and second opinions on existing designs. If something is wrong, we tell you in writing. If it's fine, we tell you that too — and you can proceed with confidence.

What if my plot is on a slope, or has unusual soil?

Both are common in Nairobi and Kiambu. We recommend a soil test where needed and design the foundation for the actual conditions on your plot — not a generic template. This is where cheap structural design costs clients the most money later.
